INTERVIEW with Big Saxy

Jan - Do ever want to be famous and tour the world?

BS - I am famous! I have eight beautiful children and wife that is my biggest fan. No, I am a sit in KING! I have sit in with so many big names.  I have played on tour, I wasn't that impressed with the life. I have a few recordings here and there. First real recording experience was with Mal Waiters " Hole In The Wall Remix" I played the sax solo at the 2:00 min mark and sax parts for the horn section. The second was with Walt Carroll at Texas Studio C on his his album '"This Old House"
I hope to record my own soon. If what I have to give makes it then I will deal with that when it comes.

Jan - Do make a living performing?

BS - UUHHHHH! Heck no! Playing is my HABBIT!  The money I make playing pays for that Habbit! For 25 year I have worked for and owned music stores repairing musical instruments.

Jan - How did you get into that?

BS - A month before I got out of school for the summer, my dad took me to breakfast with a friend of ours. He owned a music store and offered me a chance to become an apprentice in musical instrument repair. At that time I didn't realize that I was giving up every weekend and summer for the rest of my life!  I'm just kidding. I love and have loved every minute.

Jan - How did you get started playing sax?

BS - My dad was a saxman. I thought that was the coolest thing ever. He use to take me to the Honky Tonks to hear him play. I knew as early as five, that was what I wanted to be.
My dad traveled alot and while he was gone I would muscle his horn together and up onto a stool, where I would play it badly. He figured it out when his sax wasn't playing the way it should and I quickly confessed to droping it. After the beating, little saxy started lessons with dad. A few years later at the early age 9, I was playing in Honky Tonks along side dad, country, big band, blues, oldies! What ever the paying gig was that week.
I remember back in school, before I even had a drivers liscense, I'd sneak out to go blow my horn at the clubs. Man, I even road the bus to dallas. Most of the time I road my motorcycle or mom's car to Dallas to sit in at Schooners', Greenville bar & Grill, The Bone, JJ's Blues bar, The Hole In The WAll! Man that was my education!" Look musicians and bands come and go. I blow for my dad, my children, now my wonderful wife, She is my number one fan. Heck, I blow to keep my SANITY!

Jan - Currently he BLOWS all over Texas! If you need a horn man for a recording or a weekend show! info@bigsaxy.com
